An introduction to the basics of prostate cancer

Millions of men suffer from problems that could be underlying reasons for prostate cancer. In many cases the death comes first and the cancer is diagnosed later.
Prostate is a gland of the size of walnut and it is located in the middle of our pelvis. The primary role of prostrate is to produce the fluid contents in the semen. Semen incidentally is the substance which protects as well as transports the sperm traveling out of the penis.
You should understand that it is a part of the male anatomy and only a man would be at risk of prostate cancer attacks. Normally people in the advanced ages are prone to attacks of this disease. Of course it does not mean that younger people do not run the risk. However, older people are subjected to attacks of prostate cancer in much larger numbers. Those who have a long and strong history of family diseases also have risk of suffering the attack. .
Even the physicians get confused at times in diagnosing prostate cancer since the symptoms of this disease are very similar to the BPH that also causes high PSA levels. However the two diseases are different on many counts. Prostate cancer is much more serious in comparison to BPH as a disease. There are also many wrong notions and misconceptions regarding this disease and its possible treatments.
Normally there are four defined stages of prostate cancer. These are determined on the basis of the Gleason grade and PSA levels. Gleason grade is the score allotted to you basing on the intensity of the attack. It specifies how the cells in your prostate looks under the microscope when it is affected by cancer. The grade two through four are considered low grade prostate cancer. Such cancer will grow slowly. Grades through five to seven are considered to be the intermediary grades while the Grades through eight to ten are considered the most acute and fast growth rates. Treatment of prostate cancer is naturally dependent on the stage of the disease you are suffering from.
During research and analysis it has come out that black men have the comparatively higher rates of prostate cancer and the mortality rate due to this disease is higher among them in comparison to their white counterparts. Urinary problems happen to be the most common initial symptoms of the disease. However there are a number of uncommon symptoms as well that are yet to be identified uniformly by the medical scientists.
One of the main features of prostate cancer is that it could result in symptoms that require emergent medical attention. Such problems could be anything from acute urinary retention through spinal cord problems. It is true that these symptoms are rare in nature. However, the patients should be careful about them to recognize the first symptoms of the fatal disease. What is necessary is awareness about the possible symptoms as well as the dangerous outcome of the ailments.
Medically viewing, prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer from which men suffer to day. Scientists have been gathering statistics for quite some times now to find out any uniform process of diagnosing and sorting out the problem. However, till date the statistics have not been documented in a comprehensive manner that would help them to research and analyze them for possible positive outcome.
One of the methods used for diagnosing the prostate cancer is called prognosis. In it the doctors examine various stages of cancer to find out the survival rates. On the basis of the results they analyze and try to find out the possible reasons of the cancer. Thus prognosis is very useful in providing comprehensive knowledge on the dreaded disease.
A last thing about prostate cancer is that a low stage cancer could be worse if you have high PSA level in blood in comparison to high stage cancer if you have low PSA levels. As it is the survival rate with the disease is difficult to determine. However the rate is quite considerable at 65% to 98% for the stages one and two. The rate is lower for stage four at around 30% only. In such cases the normal expectancy of survival is two years from the date of diagnosis.
